I want to create an intro to my youtube channel. I would like to use the song "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana. The sound clip would last about 20 sec. Is this legal?

Well, if you check out my YouTube channel www.youtube.com/mechanicalwood , you can see that I use a lot of songs on most of my videos.
After you upload your video you will receive an email to your inbox at hotmail saying that it has 3rd party copyright stuff and it might either be blocked just on Germany or any country like that, so you might want to check on that. Remember most viewers are from the USA so it doesn't really matter for me.
There are chances someone might want to flag your video and then the video could be removed

Technically, yes, it is illegal. It is copyrighted material. Because you don't get any monetary gain from its use it might be legal, but it is copyrighted material. Just do it. If there is a problem with it the YouTube will delete the video and you can recreate it with a different song.
