subscribe in real life means paying some money to get a series of books or product that would come out every month/week/year. The difference with the subscribe in real life and subscribe in youtube is that you don't pay to get the video. It's free and unlimited. You can only subscribe to channels in youtube but not videos. When you subscribe to a channel, you will be informed if there are new videos posted by that channel that you subscribed to. If you don't, you will not be informed. Some channels are private and only if you subscribe to that channel, you may able to see the videos in that channel.
Channels are profiles (like a facebook/myspace/friendster/twitter profile) that a youtube user can use to post their videos. When you sign up on youtube, you will automatically be given a channel. If you subscribe to a particular channel, you are known as a subscriber. Note that some channels would reward their subscriber by giving out free T-shirts and stuffs.

Nothing bad will happen if you subscribe to someone on YouTube. It's free, and there's no strings attached. It's not like subscribing to a magazine in real life.
Basically, when you subscribe to someone on YouTube, their newest videos and recent activity show up directly on your YouTube homepage whenever you sign in! It makes it easier to follow their activity on YouTube and access their newest videos. It's pretty cool and convenient!
All you have to do is click the yellow button, and you're all set and subscribed.
Plus, subscribing is also a great way of showing your support for your favorite YouTubers! They'll definitely appreciate your subscription.
