Question:
AVI Media Codecs HELP!?
2014-05-11 20:24:41 UTC
I upload videos to youtube every other day. I recently got a new computer that i built from scratch. This new computer will not play avi files. When i try to play them it only plays sound. I have deduced this to issues with codecs. I have looked for codecs all over the place. I cant find the right one. Normally the more codecs that yoiu install the worse your problem gets. I really need to find the right codecs to play AVI files. I use Dxtory to record my videos.

Dxtory Codec and some others are being installed automatically when you install the problem, you somehow managed to corrupt the codec.

1. Firstly go to Control Panel - Programs and Files - in the search bar in right-top screen type "codec" - and remove all codecs which you find unless you know you will definitely use them such as Lagarith Codec. After uninstallation restart PC (important).

2. Next install K-Lite Codec Pack (download link: http://goo.gl/Dk5OmY ). During installation installer might detect corrupted codecs on your PC, allow it to remove or fix them if it detects them. Don't worry, K-Lite integrates itself into Windows Media Player so you don't have to use a different player.

3. This is optional step, but it's best to do it. After K-Lite installation you should open the newly installed "Codec Tweak Tool". There select "Fixes" - Tick everything and Apply. Next click "Reset", tick everything and Apply.

4. Restart PC and you are done. You may have to record fresh footage to start seeing the video.

This should solve your issue. If you'll have any other issues with Dxtory or Gaming video encoding you can ask away at Encoding Talk Forum for a quick reply: http://EncodingTalk.com

Use videolan player... plays everything practically

EDIT: then install ffmpeg or LAV filters to keep using WMP

it probably is to do with the media player you are using, you have to get the supported codecs. I am using VLC Media player and works pretty well with most video formats without having to get additional codecs

i think windows (i assume that is what you are using as you gave no info) specifically windows media player, supports avi (as it has done so from xp) MP4 and -DS/-TS streams (for AVCHD).

avi is one of the most common and oldest encoding formats and is literally supported by any player.

choose VLC (videolan) if you think ffmpeg is "good enough".

otherwise try MPC-HC with the LAV filters.

before you install those, uninstall all codecs, and any players you dont need and reboot.
