Youtube Subs??? Please check this out please....?

Ok.
I've just gotten a youtube profile (i know keeping up with the times, eh?)
Anyways, whats the dealio with random people subbing me begging me to 'sub them back' with pictures such as 'SUB4SUB' and no videos on there profiles????Why would i?? and why would they?? they have no videos and nor do i??!!!!
Can anyone please tell me why these people even exist if 'subs' are there main priority in life???. http://www.youtube.com/user/Lavaflows2 is an example
Are subscriptions a secret currency i don't know of??:P whats the story!!!!!
Sorry if this is a newbie Q but i really do not have a frickin clue about this.
Also, i'm not advertising the above site/channel thingy but they just subbed me and like 12seconds later said ''i unsubbed cos your a troll'' ?WHAT THE FRICK!
