Hi everyone

Im planning on starting up a youtube channel about beauty and make up etc. I would really like to use some music in the backround of my videos and of course would be putting the credits to the musician in my videos. Im a little confused though, I have read that its illegal to use music in youtube videos even if you give the credit to the musician and your video will be taken down. But if thats true, how come beauty gurus like Macbarbie07,Michellephan, Beautysplurge among many other youtubers use music and give the credit but there videos are still up?

Im very interested in putting music in my videos, can someone please give me a link or something to tell me if its really illegal or not? I just dont want to be sued or anything lol

You need a license to put music in your videos, unless you compose, perform, and record the music yourself. Without a license, using the music is illegal, and you can be banned from YouTube and sued in court for copyright infringement. Crediting the artist does not change this.

If you want background music, and you don't want to create your own music, you'll need to license something. Popular songs cost thousands of dollars to license, when the copyright owners consent to license them at all, so they aren't usually practical. However, you can license royalty-free background music from various sites on the Web. Google for "royalty-free." Usually the licensing fee is just a few dollars. Some sites will license music for free as long as you credit the artist in your video.

What other people get away with doesn't matter. If you use music without permission, you're the one who gets banned from YouTube or dragged into court, not the other people who got away with it. When other people have music on their videos, either they've licensed the music, or YouTube and the copyright owners haven't discovered their infringement yet.

It is illegal to use someone else's music in a youtube video without permission from the copyright holder.

Some people are getting permission from the copyright owners, some are ignoring and hoping they don't get caught and some people write their own music.

Youtube doesn't catch everyone but when they do, they seem to either remove the sound completely, remove the sound in certain countries, delete the video or take away your channel. A lot of people fall through the cracks because youtube is so big. The problem with taking the chance is that if you do get big, you're more easily noticed and therefore a better chance of getting caught.

Don't use copyrighted music. If you do they won't let you become a partner unless you delete all the videos with the illegal music.

Try out Jamendo. They give out free music, just make sure you give them credit and link back to Jamendo site.
