How do I download clips to make a vid?

I want to make a Vampire Diaries fanvid, but I am not sure how to go about downloading clips. I've never made one before so I have no idea. Thanks :)

use real player to download almost any video of th internet that you can stream. then you can trim the video to any length or position you want
